how to look out for a good violin http://www.regalmusic.com/pointers.htm
this site is GREAT, tells u pretty much everythin to look out for in a violin. my violin dosent have ALOT of flaming but does have sum, and i have real ebony purfling, this site will bcome a really good source when i buy ma next violin (probably in like 10 yrs time)
and wai, you know how u said you liked a heavy bow, according to this site there not as good
Another problem with cheap bows is they tend to be heavy. This makes it hard to control the bow and achieve accurate bowing. It is very common for professional violinists to pay thousands of dollars for a bow that is light weight, balanced and rigid.
guys, too see if your violin is good or okay, check out the site and do some checking

. the flaming bit. does flaming really tell whether an instrument is good? if so, does it directly impact the violin, or does it simply indicate something about the craftsmenship?

i would luv to have flaming violin, i think it looks great, the flaming is quality of the wood, good wood are old wood, old wood would have HIGH flaming (the older the trees, th e more ring it has, the rings are the flames)

Yes, flaming does point to an instrument of quality. I'm not sure why, but it is true.

I haven't seen a good violin without any flaming, and good old violins are made of trees that grow really slowly (i.e. has rings close together). My violin is only 300 bucks, so it's got no flaming at all lol...

my viola has flaming, and its a nice one. Its new though, so the sound will improve, as the site said.

I now have a much better violin (it's actually an antique lol). I wasn't expecting to find something so good. It was left damaged and unwanted at the workshop I visited, and it just happened to be finished repairing on the day I arrived. My teacher was also there to -*test*-('") it out, and she was amazed. It doesn't have a lot of flaming, but it's the sound that matters the most, not what it looks like.
