I will never use tapes again in my life. first of all, i really never needed them, and second of all, they make my instrument have these lines along the fingerboard. I will NEVER have that on my new viola.

good luck with that! if you want to use tapes, use clear tape. you can see them in light, as the light reflects off the tape. but they don't leave as much residue. to clean the residue, dont use a wet cloth. instead, use a dry cloth and something sharp (non-metal) to scrape off the residue. i once used a wooden peg to scrape off my tape rubbish. metal can really scratch the fingerboard

I have one tape on my bass at middle C. I find that it makes navigating the rest of the instrument much easier. It is just a tiny tape under one string. I have noticed that some very high quality basses have little inlaid dots to mark out the positions and it looks very nice.

Haha, Im bringing this back. My old teacher made everyone take off their tapes, weather they doubted themselves or not. They all sounded fine. I havent had stripes im sooooooo long. I cant imagine my viola with stripes on it...
